Overview

Yukthi - Scan Before You Buy is a free Android application designed to empower users with transparent, science-backed insights into the nutritional content of food products. Developed by Dreamers Doers, the app aims to simplify the often overwhelming task of deciphering food labels by providing a color-coded summary that indicates the health impact of each product. Its core purpose is to support healthier food choices through real-time analysis, making it a valuable tool for individuals focused on wellness, dietary management, or reducing consumption of ultra-processed foods.

The app is particularly useful for consumers who want to make informed decisions at the grocery store or during meal planning. By scanning a product’s barcode, users receive immediate feedback on its nutritional profile, helping them identify items high in sugar, salt, or unhealthy fats. This functionality supports users in managing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or weight-related concerns. The app also encourages proactive engagement by allowing users to upload images and data for products not yet in its database, fostering community-driven content expansion.

Yukthi leverages established nutrition profiling models from reputable organizations including the World Health Organization, Food Standards Agency, and Food and Agricultural Organization. These frameworks are used to evaluate products and generate health impact ratings. The app is categorized under Lifestyle with a focus on Health & Fitness, indicating its role as a personal wellness utility rather than a medical or clinical tool. It is compatible with Android 6.0 and available at no cost, making it accessible to a broad audience seeking to improve their dietary habits.

Key Features & Capabilities

• Barcode Scanning for Instant Nutrition Analysis – Users can scan a product’s barcode to instantly access a color-coded health summary, helping quickly assess its suitability for a healthy diet.
• Health Impact Rating System – Based on WHO, FSA, and FAO nutrition models, the app evaluates products using scientific criteria to determine their overall health impact.
• Ultra-Processed Food Warning – The app identifies and flags ultra-processed foods, supporting users in reducing intake of ingredients linked to long-term health risks.
• Manual Product Submission – Users can upload photos and nutritional data for products not yet in the database, contributing to the app’s growing knowledge base.
• Simple, Visual Interface – A clean, intuitive layout presents complex nutritional information in an easily digestible format using color codes and clear indicators.

These features enable users to make informed decisions while shopping, especially in environments where food labels are difficult to interpret. For example, a user can scan a packaged snack and immediately see if it falls into a high-sugar or high-salt category. The ability to submit missing products ensures the app remains relevant across diverse markets and regional brands.

This participatory design enhances both usability and long-term utility. The app does not require internet connectivity after initial data loading, allowing offline use in stores or remote locations. It supports healthy lifestyle habits by promoting awareness and encouraging mindful consumption.

User Interface, Workflow & Performance

The user interface of Yukthi is designed with simplicity and clarity in mind. Navigation is streamlined, allowing users to access the scanner, view recent scans, and submit new products with minimal effort. The main screen features a prominent scan button, with results displayed in a visually intuitive format using color-coded indicators—typically green for healthy, yellow for moderate, and red for less healthy options.

Workflow efficiency is high, as the entire process—from opening the app to receiving a health assessment—can be completed in under 10 seconds. The app maintains a consistent layout across screens, reducing the learning curve for new users. The design prioritizes readability, with large text and clear icons that enhance accessibility for older users or those with visual impairments.

Performance details were not specified by the developer. However, based on the app’s size of 10 MB and its focus on lightweight scanning and static data retrieval, it is expected to run smoothly on devices meeting the minimum Android 6.0 requirement. The developer did not provide additional system requirements or resource usage details.

Stability during extended use was not documented. Users may experience delays in scanning if the device’s camera is slow or if the barcode is poorly printed. General software behavior patterns suggest minimal CPU and RAM consumption, but actual performance may vary based on device hardware.

Compatibility & System Requirements

Yukthi is compatible with Android 6.0 and above, ensuring accessibility across a wide range of older and newer devices. This broad compatibility allows users with legacy smartphones to benefit from the app’s health-focused tools without needing high-end hardware.

The app has a file size of 10 MB, indicating a lightweight footprint that minimizes storage usage and download time. This makes it suitable for users with limited device space or slower internet connections. The developer did not specify additional hardware requirements such as RAM, CPU, or camera resolution. As such, exact performance expectations on specific devices remain unclear.

Installation is straightforward, with no complex setup steps reported. The app does not require administrative permissions beyond camera access for scanning and basic storage access for caching data. Users should ensure their device’s camera is functional and has sufficient resolution to read barcodes accurately.
